I'm Laughing So Hard About Handicapps.....(Not Offensively, I Promise!).....

Throughout my life, I have been fortunate enough to work with people with disabilities. I help out with the Special Olympics of Utah as often as I am able. When I was a senior in high school, my church had, and still has,  a program where boys are paired up with other boys with disabilities, both physical and mental handicaps, where we would do scouting projects. Girls would be assigned to other girls with disabilities and do fun arts and crafts activities, and once a month, we would do a combined activity where the boys and girls did fun activities, like we had a fun 1950s Sock Hop dance, and we also put on a play for all of the families involved with the program. It was so much fun.

As I've learned about myself having Asperger's Syndrome, a mild case, but it's still there, I've done a lot of reading and studying of people with all different types of physical and mental health, and I feel blessed to have met people throughout my life. Sometimes I feel that people with disabilities have life more figured out than I do in a lot of ways. I feel so humbled to be able to cross paths with people that inspire me to live a better life.

I came across a YouTube Channel called Squirmy and Grubs. It is a channel about a man named Shane Burcaw, who suffers from Spinal Muscular Atrophy, and his wife, Hannah. Although Shane's physical body is handicapped, it's his mind and his wit that soar. The channel on YouTube, which you can find by clicking right HERE,  where Shane and Hannah make videos to answer people's questions about them as a couple, and every video is fun. They know exactly how to deal with hardships that come along by using each new experience with wit are grace.

Everything from what do they need to do to take care of Shane to how they are intimate with each other. The intimacy questions people ask fills up three videos, and Shane warns and warns and warns that their families and friends don't watch the video because they don't want them to have "Too Much Information", and even the warnings are hysterical.

Anyway, Shane has written three books dealing with his life and his disabilities, and handles everything with humor and wit. I hardly sit down and read a book from cover to cover like I just did with Shane's book, Strangers Assume My Girlfriend is my Nurse,  from cover to cover, but I was laughing so hard and at awe with how amazing Shane's writing and sense of humor actually is. I am excited to read his other two books, Laughing at my Nightmare and Not So Different. It's so rare and refreshing to read something that humbles you and makes you laugh so hard your stomach muscles are sore for a few hours after.

Here are the links if you are interested in reading Shane's books as well.

Well, it's that sad time again, where I have run out of things to talk about and recommend for this post. I hope that you will check out at least one of Shane's books. He is a fantastic writer, and how brave he is to put himself out there is amazing. I hope that you are all staying safe. Wear masks when you have to. Be nice to everyone, and have a fantastic, whatever part of the day you are currently reading this blog post during!

Uncky Nate Out!!!
