"Day" 10 and No Ducks on the Pond!

I have to apologize again. I really wanted to get new posts out everyday, but I would rather give you better posts, over just throwing something up.

Today's song is number ten on the list. So, here it is....

A song that makes me sad: Salt in the Snow by The Classic Crime.

There are two versions of the song, one is electric and the other acoustic, and I went for the acoustic version because it's more emotional than the original. The Classic Crime has been one of my favorite bands that came out around 2005 or so. Check them out, they deserve it!

Okay, now for No Ducks on the Pond. When my dad was growing up, he was an amazing baseball pitcher that put him through college at what is now Southern Utah University in Cedar City, Utah. He played a stint in the semi-pros, where he hurt his elbow and needed surgery that ended his career as a player, but went back to school and got a teaching degree so that he could teach and coach baseball, as well as other sports as well from baseball to football to golf.

Long story short, my dad's side of our family are hardcore sports fanatics, which I gladly inherited from the Unck and Noorda clan. I got my performing and fine arts side from my mom's side of the family. Of course there are so many weird things I've discovered myself and love that don't really land in those categories.

Anywho, we are half way through May, and if there wasn't a pandemic going on, we would be in the thick of baseball season. We are avid baseball fans and go to the ballpark all of the time. I love baseball because it's an interesting sport that has more going on in it than there seems to be. I like being able to know exactly what's going on and being able to have a conversation with friends or family at the same time.

Anyway, No Ducks On The Pond means, there are no runners on base, if you're not a baseball fan. It's sad that we have to be careful and miss out on America's favorite pastime, but hold on, there have been a ton of movies based on baseball, and thought that I would make a baseball movie checklist to get some entertainment and a baseball fix.

1. Take Me Out to the Ballgame  Rated:G  It's a fun musical with Gene Kelly that is better at creating mis-adventures on and off the field.

2. The Rookie  Rated:G  A true story of a 40 year old high school teacher and baseball coach in the middle of Texas, who promises his team if they win some games, he will go to the open tryouts for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays

3. 42  Rated PG-13  This is one of my favorite sports movies. It's about the incredible story of Jackie Robinson, the first Black Man to play in the major leagues, instead of the negro league that was set up. I love that the baseball stuff is great, but the story, and the man behind it are even better.

4. The Field of Dreams   Rated PG, This one is a classic in every way. Kevin Costner and James Earl Jones are awesome in this tale where a local farmer cuts down his corn crops to build a baseball field because he hears a voice telling him to do it, and turns out to be a place where ball players that have passed on can come back to Earth and play baseball the way it used to be played.

5. Fever Pitch   Rated PG-13  In this one, Jimmy Fallon is a hardcore Boston Red Socks fan with season tickets that often get him in trouble with friends, and when he meets a girl, it throws him into a world where he may have to give up part of himself to have the other part of himself. It's not a perfect movie, but it's really fun.

6. A League of Their Own Rated PG.  There's no crying in baseball! This one is another classic. It tells the story of a women's baseball league that was formed while the men were called to serve their country in World War II. Tom Hanks is awesome in this movie. Gena Davis is also great, along with Madonna.

7. The Sandlot Rated:PG   I was the same age as the kids in this film when it was made, and wouldn't you know it, they filmed the movie about fifteen minutes away from my house. It also starred Indiana Jones's girlfriend, Karen Allen. I saw this movie at a discount dollar movie theater probably fifteen times, and that isn't an exaggeration. I saw it fifteen times, and Jurassic Park eleven times. The Sandlot is about a kid who is new in town, and all of the kids his age play baseball, but he doesn't know anything about it, and ends up losing, and getting back his step-dads Babe Ruth autographed baseball. Don't pay attention to the "sequels", just warning you ahead of time.

8.  Moneyball Rated PG-13. This film has Brad Pitt, and he's in a management position for the Oakland A's, and doesn't hire a baseball expert, but an accountant to put together a winning baseball team. It's not so much of an action baseball  movie, but the actors are great and it's interesting to see how it all worked out.

9. Rookie of the Year   Rated PG. This one is on the new Disney Plus streaming service. It's about a 12 year old kid who loves baseball, and he wants to be a good player, but he is more of the kid on the team they stick out in right field to watch the grass grow, but when he steps and slips on a baseball, he breaks his arm, and his tendons heal tighter than normal, and it gives him a 100 mile an hour throw, and is drafted by the LA Dogers. However, his gift doesn't last as long as he would like, and has to learn to play the game without professional gifts.

10. I will finish this list with one of my favorite movies, and not just a sports film, but just a great all around film,

The Natrual: Rated PG  This one stars Robert Redford stars as Roy Hobbs, a ballplayer who is getting up there in age, and runs into an old flame, who may or may not have his son. The movie is perfectly acted and the music score by Randy Newman is utter soundtrack perfection.

Well, That's about all I have today. I hope you made it through everything. Sure, baseball isn't quite here yet but I hope I pointed you in a way to get that ballpark itch out of your system.

Until Next Time, Stay safe!
